Goal Setting Tips

Ideas, dreams, wants, and dissatisfaction - that’s where change begins.

Sometimes we have an idea of changes that we want to make or things we wish were different in our lives. Sometimes we know where we want to go, but we look at the end result and maybe it looks overwhelming, like losing 25 lbs., or maybe it’s to begin an exercise program and we don’t have a clue where to start.

But then we have to take the ideas and put some action to them. That’s where goal setting comes in. The ideas to change won’t do us any good if we don’t take the steps necessary to make the change happen.

Goals need to be broken down into small, baby steps so they are doable. Put all those baby steps together, one after another, and pretty soon you reach the desired goal!! Sounds simple, but it takes some endurance and determination to stick with it. AND so worth it!!

  • First of all, before setting the goal, you need to know why you want it. That’s REALLY important!! If the why means enough to you, you can continually go back and look at it to help you stay on track when you feel like giving up.
     
  • Focus on where you want to be. Picture yourself there? What do you do to be that person? What kind of exercise do you do? How do you eat to stay healthy? What do you do to enjoy yourself? Focus on living like that now. AND thank yourself for taking care of you! Relax and enjoy yourself along the way, confident that you are making healthy choices.
     
  • Goals should be S.M.A.R.T.
    S: Specific
    M: Measureable
    A: Action-oriented
    R: Realistic
    T: Time–dependent
