Nutrition / The Legume That Lowers
CholesterolThe Legume That Lowers CholesterolThere's a certain bean that may have cholesterol-lowering powers. Research has shown that chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans, can help lower your cholesterol profile. In a small study, participants who ate roughly 25 ounces of chickpeas each week for 12 weeks showed an improvement in their cholesterol levels compared to participants who did not eat chickpeas for 4 weeks. Not only that, but their insulin levels also improved, and they lost a small amount of weight--without dieting or exercising. Wow! What great reasons to add them into your diet. Try adding them to your salad or try out the following recipe: Quick & Easy Hummus Recipe
1-15 oz can chickpeas drained
Place all ingredients in your food processor and puree to desired consistency or mash with a fork or potato masher. I generally add a little purified water to get a nice creamy consistency. Taste and adjust flavors to your individual liking. Serve as a dip for veggies or a spread on crackers. |
