Playground Fitness

In the whirlwind of a busy life, finding time for exercise often slips through the cracks. But the approaching warm weather means more time outside, which might serve as just the inspiration needed.

That’s where playground fitness comes in — this fitness solution is a game-changer!

There tips are designed for the multitasking superheroes. For anyone who juggles work, family, and household responsibilities. We can have a healthy, energized life without compromising the time we cherish with our families.

Start by walking some laps around the playground (or the neighborhood). Pushing a stroller adds an extra layer of resistance. Alternate periods of high knees and lunges to get your blood pumping. If you’re feeling up for it, short sprints can really help get your heart rate up!

Next, let’s do some calf raises. Wrap your left ankle behind the right one. Slowly raise up on your toes then lower back down. Do 12-15 reps, then switch sides. Calf raises help build strength in your Achilles tendon, as well as strengthening around the ankle and knee joint.

Now find yourself a picnic bench or something at a similar height. It’s time to work those chest muscles! With your hands on the bench, do 10 inclined push-ups or more if you can. You can also try some pushup variations — traditional push-ups with your hand and toes on the ground, or modified push-ups with your knees on the ground.

While you’re at the bench, we can work the triceps, too! Starting with hands on edge of the bench, knees bent with feet flat on the ground, and abs tight & engaged. You are going to lower then raise your body as one unit, inhaling on the dip and exhaling when you come back up. The farther out you place your feet, the more difficult the move.

Let’s target the abs again with some planks. Begin by lying on your tummy. Push your body up on your forearms and balls of your feet, similar to a push-up. Make sure your abs are tight and pulled in & up slightly. Keep your neck relaxed with your gaze slightly in front of you. Hold for as long as possible, remembering to breathe!

Working out doesn’t always have to be seen as a task to conquer — it can be a fun family bonding time. Bring your pets, kids, & grandkids and get them in on it, too. This is just an example of the many things you can do on the playground or most anywhere outside. Look around you and utilize what is already there. Your next great workout could be right outside your door!
