Let’s talk good old-fashioned cleaning!

Back in the day, our grandparents always did a big deep clean at least once a year. They didn’t just tidy up – they went ceiling to floor, scrubbing inside cupboards and out. They’d even hang rugs out on the clothesline and beat them with the broom!

While the timing may look different now, the idea is still the same: every so often, it’s important to reset and clear things out.

Last spring, I took on a declutter challenge of my own. I tend to be pretty good at keeping spaces minimal, but piles still creep up – closets overflowing, files stacking up, even mental clutter weighing me down. That challenge reminded me that decluttering isn’t just about stuff. It’s about the way you think, feel, & move through life.

Here are a few lessons I carried with me:

Digging Deeper

At first, decluttering feels like a surface-level task, like you're just clearing things away.

But it can quickly uncover old thought patterns and habits you’ve been holding onto.

Taking the time to notice what’s underneath helps you see what really matters in your life today.

Love It or Leave It

If it doesn’t spark joy or serve a purpose, then it’s time to let it go.

A UCLA study found that clutter increases stress hormones, directly affecting our mood.

The more we learn to release what we don’t love, the more space we create for what we do.

Use It or Lose It

If you haven’t used it in a long time, chances are you don’t need it.

Letting go of what’s unused frees up your energy for the things you actually enjoy.

And once you decide to part with it, move it out of your home right away. It’s amazing how quickly lightness follows!

Embrace Discomfort

Saying goodbye to certain items – or even certain beliefs – isn’t always easy.

Growth often happens when we’re willing to step into that discomfort. By pushing through, you not only clear physical space but also build resilience for other areas of life.

Release and Replace

Every time we release what no longer serves us, we make room for something better.

That might mean improved focus, better sleep, or simply more peace of mind.

Clearing out the old is like opening the door to new energy and opportunities.

Persistence Pays Off

Decluttering doesn’t happen overnight – it is a process! The key is to stay with it, even when it feels tough.

Over time, the small steps add up, leaving you with both a lighter space and a lighter mind.

What I discovered is that decluttering goes far beyond tidying up a house. It’s about creating space for new experiences, healthier habits, and a clearer head. However you approach it, whether one drawer at a time or a full reset, the benefits will reach far beyond your shelves.

Letting go is the first step to moving forward!
