Cancer is one of those words that can stop us in our tracks.

It’s a diagnosis that touches countless lives, especially as we age. But it’s also a reminder of something powerful... that our health habits and mindset truly matter.

While we can’t always prevent cancer, we can strengthen our bodies and spirits to face it with resilience.

A Personal Journey

When I was diagnosed with Stage 2 rectal cancer in December 2021, I was completely shocked. I had always believed that living a healthy lifestyle would protect me from something like this.

For a while, I blamed myself — wondering what I could have done differently.

But my doctors reassured me that my fitness routine and healthy habits likely helped keep my cancer localized. My active lifestyle didn’t cause my cancer, it helped my body fight it.

That realization gave me strength and a new perspective: we can’t control everything, but we can give ourselves the best foundation possible.

Why Awareness Matters

According to Johns Hopkins, 56% of all cancer diagnoses and 70% of cancer deaths occur in adults over 65. Cancer is very much a senior health issue — and awareness saves lives.

Among all cancers, breast cancer remains the most common, with over 300,000 new cases expected in the U.S. this year. While we hear about it often, there are still many misconceptions surrounding early detection and risk factors.

Taking Action

The Mayo Clinic recommends yearly mammograms starting at age 40. Early detection makes a huge difference, often leading to simpler and more effective treatment.

Between appointments, it’s important to perform self-exams to notice any changes — not just lumps, but also changes in texture, shape, or skin appearance. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to talk to your healthcare provider.

And remember, this isn’t just about breast cancer. Regular checkups, balanced nutrition, exercise, and stress management all play a role in maintaining overall health and lowering risk.

Cancer can happen to anyone — but how we respond makes all the difference. By staying active, informed, and proactive, we give ourselves the best chance at living long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Prevention and awareness are powerful acts of self-love!
