We All Need a Place to Belong

How Movement, Community, and Connection Help Us Live Better for Longer™

When I look back over my life, one thread seems to weave its way through almost every chapter.

The desire to belong.

I think, deep down, most of us want the same things. We want to know we are welcome. We want to know we matter. We want to feel that there is a place where we can arrive exactly as we are and be accepted.

There have been many seasons in my own life when I wondered where I fit. Like so many people, I searched for connection, acceptance, and a sense of home. I did not always recognize that longing for what it was, but I can see it more clearly now.

Years later, when I created Alive, Fit & Free, I believed I was building exercise and wellness programs.

I was—but something much more meaningful was happening, too.

We were creating a place where people could belong.

More Than an Exercise Class

Every week, people walk into our classes carrying much more than water bottles, exercise bands, or Pilates balls.

They bring their stories.

They bring health challenges, grief, uncertainty, hopes, fears, and dreams. Some are living with Parkinson’s. Some are experiencing changes in memory or mobility. Some are caring for a spouse or family member. Others simply want to remain strong, independent, and actively involved in their lives.

A new participant may enter the room wondering:

Will I be able to do this?

Will I know anyone?

Will I be able to keep up?

Will I fit in?

Then someone smiles at them.

An instructor remembers their name.

Another participant moves a chair over and says, “Come sit with us.”

Someone misses a movement, everyone laughs together, and the nervousness begins to disappear.

Before long, people who arrived as strangers are encouraging one another, celebrating progress, and asking, “Will we see you next week?”

After more than 45 years of working in health, fitness, and wellness, I have learned that people often begin a program because they want to improve their balance, strength, mobility, or brain health.

But many stay because of the people.

They stay because someone notices when they are absent.

They stay because their victories are celebrated.

They stay because they have found friendship, encouragement, laughter, and hope.

They stay because they belong.

Belonging Is Part of Wellness

We often talk about healthy aging in terms of movement, nutrition, sleep, and keeping the brain active. All of those things matter deeply.

But social health matters, too.

The World Health Organization describes loneliness and social isolation as important social determinants of health and notes that high-quality relationships are essential to mental health, physical health, and overall well-being. The National Institute on Aging also warns that loneliness and social isolation can affect physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional health, particularly as changes in mobility, health, memory, or personal relationships make it harder for some older adults to stay connected.

Loneliness and social isolation are not quite the same thing. A person can live alone without feeling lonely, and someone can feel deeply lonely even when surrounded by other people. Belonging is not simply about having people nearby. It is about feeling known, valued, included, and connected.

Meaningful social activities, community groups, and supportive relationships can improve mental well-being, life satisfaction, and quality of life. They may also help reduce depressive symptoms and create stronger support for healthy behaviors.

I see this come alive in our classes.

When people know that others are expecting them, they are often more motivated to show up.

When they feel safe and supported, they become more willing to try something challenging.

When everyone laughs through a complicated coordination pattern, making a mistake no longer feels embarrassing.

And when someone says, “I couldn’t do that last week—but today I can,” the whole room celebrates.

That is not just exercise.

That is connection in action.

The Four Pillars of Health™

At Alive, Fit & Free, we believe that true wellness must support the whole person. That is why our classes are shaped by the Four Pillars of Health™: Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Energetic. These pillars are not separate boxes. They work together, strengthening and supporting one another.

Mental

Our brains need opportunities to remain engaged, curious, and challenged.

Learning a new movement sequence requires attention. Cross-body patterns ask the two sides of the body to coordinate. Rhythm, reaction, memory, and dual-task activities encourage participants to listen, process, respond, and adapt.

Sometimes the movement feels awkward. Sometimes we have to slow down. Sometimes we get it one day and struggle with it the next.

That is all part of learning.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to keep giving the brain meaningful opportunities to participate.

Emotional

Movement happens more easily when people feel emotionally safe.

We intentionally create an atmosphere where effort matters more than performance and progress matters more than perfection. We laugh. We encourage. We make room for difficult days. We celebrate what someone can do today instead of focusing on what they cannot do.

Confidence grows through these small experiences of success.

A participant who begins by saying, “I can’t do that,” may eventually begin saying, “Let me try.”

That change is powerful.

Physical

Our physical pillar supports the movements that help us participate more fully in everyday life.

We work on balance, strength, posture, mobility, flexibility, coordination, gait, and functional movement. We offer seated and standing options because each person arrives with different needs and abilities.

We are not moving simply to complete an exercise.

We are moving so someone can rise from a chair more confidently, walk with greater awareness, reach for something safely, travel, play with grandchildren, or continue doing the things that make life meaningful.

Energetic

Energy is about more than physical stamina.

It is also the sense of vitality, engagement, and aliveness we bring into our days.

Breathing, rhythmic movement, music, laughter, and connection can help people feel more awake and involved in the present moment. Sometimes a participant arrives tired, discouraged, or withdrawn and leaves looking brighter, smiling, and talking with friends.

That renewed energy matters.

Together, the Four Pillars remind us that wellness is not just about the body. We are teaching and supporting the whole person.

People Change People

One of the most beautiful things I have witnessed is the way participants begin caring for one another.

Someone who was once the nervous newcomer becomes the person welcoming someone else.

A participant who struggled through a movement becomes the loudest one applauding when another person succeeds.

Care partners find people who understand the joys and challenges of their experience.

People exchange phone numbers, check on one another, and form friendships that continue outside of class.

The exercises matter. The science matters. The teaching matters.

But people change people.

A kind word can change the direction of someone’s day.

A smile can tell a person, “I see you.”

An invitation to sit nearby can say, “You are welcome here.”

Someone remembering your name can remind you that you matter.

Those moments may appear small, but they are often the moments people remember.

A Place for You

I have often said that every movement teaches the brain.

I believe that deeply.

But I have also come to believe that every meaningful connection teaches us something, too.

It teaches us that we do not have to do everything alone.

It teaches us that we can keep learning.

It teaches us that we still have something valuable to offer.

It teaches us that there is hope, even during the difficult seasons.

Maybe that is what Alive, Fit & Free has always been about.

Not just movement.

Not just wellness.

Not just brain health.

But creating a place where people can come exactly as they are and know they are welcome.

A place where they can move, think, smile, and connect.

A place where they can grow stronger without feeling judged.

A place where their progress is noticed and their presence matters.

A place where they belong.

Research Spotlight

Connection Is Part of Healthy Aging

When we think about healthy aging, we often focus on exercise, nutrition, sleep, and keeping our brains active. Research suggests that meaningful social connection is just as important.

The World Health Organization and the National Institute on Aging recognize that loneliness and social isolation can affect both physical and mental health as we age. In contrast, strong social connections are linked to better emotional well-being, greater resilience, and improved quality of life.

Studies also suggest that staying socially connected may help support cognitive health by keeping us mentally engaged, emotionally supported, and motivated to remain active.

That's why community is more than a nice addition to wellness—it's an essential part of it.

At Alive, Fit & Free, we intentionally combine purposeful movement with encouragement, laughter, and meaningful relationships because we believe healthy aging is about strengthening both the body and the connections that enrich our lives.

Research Takeaway: Healthy aging isn't just about how we move—it's also about who we share the journey with.

A Note from Vickie

When I look back over my life, I can see that the desire to belong has been present through many different chapters.

I wanted to know there was a place where I was welcome.

A place where I mattered.

A place where I could show up as myself and still be accepted.

For years, I did not fully understand how deeply that longing shaped me. I certainly never imagined that one day I would help create that kind of place for someone else.

When Alive, Fit & Free began, I thought I was creating exercise and wellness programs. And of course, movement remains at the heart of what we do.

But over time, I began to see something more.

I saw friendships forming before class.

I saw participants checking on one another when someone was absent.

I saw people laugh through difficult movements and applaud when someone experienced a breakthrough.

I saw nervous newcomers become the people welcoming the next new participant.

That is when I realized we had created more than classes.

We had created a place where people could belong.

That may be one of the greatest gifts this work has given me. The thing I spent so much of my own life searching for has become something I now have the privilege of helping create for others.

My hope is that every person who enters one of our classes—whether in person or online—feels seen, supported, and encouraged.

I hope they know their presence matters.

And I hope they leave not only feeling stronger, but also knowing they do not have to walk their journey alone.

This Week's Reflection

This week, I invite you to ask yourself one simple question:

Where do you feel the greatest sense of belonging in your life?

Who are the people who encourage you to keep showing up, even on the difficult days?

How do you help others feel welcomed and included?

Is there someone who might need an invitation, a smile, or a kind word from you this week?

What is one small step you can take this month to strengthen your own health—and your connection with others?
